Lula Announces "Guaranteed" US-Brazil Trade Deal
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced on Monday that a trade agreement with the United States is "guaranteed" after his discussion with President Donald Trump in Malaysia.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. Lula shared the details in a news conference in Kuala Lumpur, noting that while Trump did not make any explicit promises, he assured Lula that a deal would be reached, possibly sooner than many expect.
"I raised the Venezuelan issue to him ... And I told him that it would be extremely important to take into account Brazil's expense as the largest country in South America, as the most important economic country of South America ... He should take in account that Brazil can help him in the relationship with Venezuela," Lula said, emphasizing Brazil’s potential role in addressing the Venezuelan crisis.
The US has accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of being the head of a drug-trafficking network, sparking concerns that the US may seek to remove him from power.
Lula also expressed Brazil’s support for Malaysia becoming a full member of BRICS, a group of 11 nations. He later took to social media platform X to describe his meeting with Trump as "great."
In his post, Lula wrote, "We discussed the bilateral trade and economic agenda in a frank and constructive manner. We agreed that our teams will meet immediately to advance in the search for solutions to the tariffs and sanctions against Brazilian authorities."
