India expresses interest in diversifying its oil imports—Rubio
Speaking to reporters, Rubio suggested India could reduce its reliance on Russian oil, stating: “India has already expressed an interest in diversifying their oil portfolio and who they buy from. And, so, India only needs so much oil.”
Later the same day, Rubio met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, where they discussed bilateral, regional, and global issues.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had indicated that India might reduce its Russian oil imports after talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The US imposed a 25% tariff on India in August, citing its rising Russian oil purchases, which Washington claimed were fueling the Ukraine conflict.
India received 34% of its oil from Russia in September. New Delhi has criticized what it views as “double standards” in energy trade, asserting that it “does not subscribe to any unilateral sanction measures” and positions itself as a “responsible actor” in the global energy market.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal also highlighted the disparity in Western sanctions, noting that Germany sought a US exemption for a Rosneft subsidiary and the UK already permits certain Russian oil purchases, while India faces pressure to halt imports.
